In this original AA, the pair of () on row 29 look like knees bending the wrong way, but on a bird that joint is the heel; the real knee stays tucked up under the feathers. Below them, the leg on the left of the picture reaches forward in six rows of //, while the one on the right stands almost straight in ||, so this red-crowned crane, seen in full profile, is mid-stride as it walks to the left. Its toes, ＿_,..-‐''´ヽ､__ on row 36, sit right where the ground line of ＿ breaks off around each foot. Up top, the red cap that gives the bird its Japanese name, tancho, is bare skin rather than feathers, and here it is a small dense block on row 1: two ▓ (dark shade) between two ▒ (medium shade), the lighter ends rounding off its corners. A lone ● on row 2 is enough for the eye, and the forehead rises in _,ｨ'´. The long bill spans two rows: from the point < on row 4, 二二ニ‐‐‐‐ and then ‾‾‾￣￣￣￣ run back as the lower edge and turn down into the throat at ヽ､, while _,.-‐'´￣￣￣ on row 3 is the upper edge, climbing toward the forehead. The black front of the neck is three parallel strokes that switch characters as the neck curves: | | | on row 5, /// on rows 6 to 9, | | | again on rows 10 to 12, then ヽヽヽ on row 13, a gentle S. A single line to their right, made of /, 〳, | and ＼, is the back of the neck, and the white gap between them is the white band down the nape. The back starts at ｀ー、＿＿＿＿ on row 12; the folded wing is a run of long strokes, ＼ joined to _ or ‾, slanting from upper left to lower right, and ノ──────────､ on row 23 is the line of the belly. What looks like a black tail is really wing feathers drooping over a white one: five long, narrow plumes, each outlined with two lines and filled with ; only on the inside, with white gaps left between them. Apart from the ground line and the short ‐‐‐‐‐‐ dashes on row 37, nothing else is drawn, and all that empty white stands in for a snowy field in winter.
