(ಠ_ಠ) is known as the "look of disapproval". It uses two wide " ಠ " eyes staring flatly at you, conveying a disapproving, unimpressed, or skeptical glare. It is one of the most recognizable text faces on the internet and a classic reaction kaomoji.

What does (ಠ_ಠ) or (¬_¬) mean? ▶

(ಠ_ಠ) and (¬_¬) mean disapproval, skepticism, or being unimpressed — a silent "I'm judging you", "really?", or "I don't believe you". People use them to side-eye someone, call out a bad take, or react to something cringe without typing a word.

What are the " ಠ " eyes made of? ▶

The " ಠ " eye is actually the Kannada letter "ṭha" (U+0CA0) from the South Indian Kannada script. It has nothing to do with its original meaning — its wide, round shape just looked perfect as a staring eye, so the internet adopted it to build the look of disapproval (ಠ_ಠ).

Is (ಠ_ಠ) an emoji or a kaomoji? ▶

(ಠ_ಠ) is a kaomoji (a text emoticon), not a Unicode emoji. It is built entirely from regular characters, so it works where emoji are blocked and looks the same on every device.

Where did the look of disapproval come from? ▶

The look of disapproval spread through online forums and Reddit in the early 2010s. Its flat, judging stare — built from the Kannada " ಠ " eyes in (ಠ_ಠ) — quickly became a go-to reaction for skepticism, side-eye, and silent disapproval across the internet.

What is the difference between a disapproval and a smug kaomoji? ▶

A disapproval kaomoji (ಠ_ಠ) is a stare aimed outward — judging or side-eyeing someone else, while a smug kaomoji is self-satisfied — feeling clever or "told you so". Both have expressive eyes, but disapproval reads as critical and skeptical, and smug reads as proud. For the self-satisfied smirk family, see the Smug Kaomoji page.
